PROCESS:

To start I would sketch the skirt, then add layers on top making more defined lines. Once satisfied I then turned to what material to use to finalise it, to keep it as pencil and shading or add colour. After sketching a draft, I then redrew it and finalized all the rough parts and moved onto colour. I chose a different colour for each of my designs. I repeated this process with every one of my illustrations.
Swan Lake is incredibly popular and was more so in the early 2000s, I thought it would be a good starting point to do something quite elegant.
I decided to make this a feather-based look inspired by swan lake and angel wings. I added dots to represent sequins that would shine in the light and make the base colour purple with streaks of light pink.

The top looks like angel or swan wings and I really liked the lines that I drew so I chose to carry that on making it the same texture throughout the whole dress. When doing the final mock up I chose to leave the sequin detail out because I felt it would ruin the smooth texture of the watercolours.
I looked at various dresses in that period and put different pieces of it together to form this yellow dress. I really liked the designs of sharp lines looking like spikes, so I drew that as the bottom half and then started thinking of the sixties and landed on the movie Hairspray that is a musical set in that period.

I started thinking of what their style was and mixing it together to create the ruffles at the top and a mini corset style around the torso. It all fits together well and adding an accessory such as gloves would make it that much more sixties as it was very popular wear in that time period.
This is a 1950s inspired piece. I chose to do black and white to show the time period and a change from adding a lot of colour. I used a drawing as inspiration based in the fifties. I chose to keep the original shape of the dress similar and style, only changing the neckline and sleeves. I added the hat and a fan to make it more linked to the period of when this was in fashion.
Swan Lake Inspired: 2000’s
To produce this design, I started to draw the skirt first from an image I found on Pinterest. As I finished the skirt, I decided to add a bow because in some fashion shows they enjoy exaggerating certain parts of a dress, so I decided to make her a belt with a massive bow on it to add a defining feature.
I chose to add shading so I could clearly see where to add darker colours vs light when adding watercolour. With most of these rough drafts it came from imagination, I only used a skirt as a starting point and then just let my pencil lead and see what my imagination came up with.
